Convert torque units: newton-meter, pound-foot, and pound-inch

Torque, also called moment of force, is measured in newton-meter (Nm), the SI unit, as well as in kilonewton-meter (kNm) for larger moments. In the US, pound-force-foot (lbf-ft) is used for larger and pound-force-inch (lbf-in) for smaller torques, complemented by the historical unit kilogram-force-meter (kgf-m) and the CGS unit dyne-centimeter.

Frequently asked questions about converting torque

1 pound-force-foot (lbf-ft) equals 1.356 newton-meter. This unit is mainly used in US vehicle spec sheets, while newton-meter (Nm) is the international standard for torque.

Pound-foot (lbf-ft) is used for larger torques, such as engine torque, while pound-inch (lbf-in) is common for smaller tightening torques, such as fine screw connections. 1 lbf-ft equals 12 lbf-in.

Torque results from force multiplied by the lever arm (distance to the pivot point): M = F * r. That's why the same force applied at a longer lever produces a larger torque – for example, this is why torque wrenches have different handle lengths.
