Electrical resistance is measured in ohm (Ω), the SI unit. For line resistances, milliohm (mΩ) is common; for circuit components, kiloohm (kΩ); and for insulation resistance, megaohm (MΩ).

Frequently asked questions about converting resistance

Since 1 kiloohm (kΩ) equals 1,000 ohm (Ω), you divide the ohm value by 1,000 to convert it to kiloohm (e.g. 4,700 Ω = 4.7 kΩ). Conversely, you multiply by 1,000 to go from kiloohm to ohm.

Electrical resistance (ohm) describes purely the resistance to direct current. With alternating current, the reactance of coils and capacitors also comes into play, which is frequency-dependent – the combination of both is called impedance. It is also stated in ohm, but is a more complex, frequency-dependent quantity.

Ohm's law states R = U / I: resistance equals voltage (in volts) divided by current (in amperes). This converter then helps you put the result into the right unit (ohm, kiloohm, megaohm).
