Molar concentration, also called molarity, states how many moles of a substance are contained in a given volume of solution. It's stated in mole, millimole, or micromole per liter, milliliter, or microliter – 1 mol/l corresponds to a 1-molar (1 M) solution.

Frequently asked questions about converting molar concentration

A 1-molar solution contains 1 mole of the dissolved substance per liter of solution, i.e. 1 mol/l. The term "molar" (M) is a common shorthand for mol/l in labs and textbooks.

Multiply the molar concentration (mol/l) by the substance's molar mass M (g/mol) to get the mass concentration (g/l): ρ = c * M. For the reverse direction, divide by M accordingly.

Physiological blood concentrations, such as glucose or electrolytes, are typically in the millimole range. mmol/l avoids unwieldy small decimal numbers, making lab values easier to read and compare.
