Molar mass states the mass of one mole of a substance and is usually given in grams per mole (g/mol). For individual atoms and molecules, dalton (Da) and the unified atomic mass unit (u) are common; for macromolecular systems like proteins, kilodalton (kDa). All combinations of SI prefixes for mass (nano to kilogram) and amount of substance (nano to kilomole) are also available.

Frequently asked questions about converting molar mass

Yes, numerically g/mol, dalton (Da), and the atomic mass unit (u) are identical – 1 g/mol = 1 Da = 1 u. g/mol tends to be used in classical chemistry, while Da and u are more common in biochemistry and physics for individual molecules.

Proteins and other macromolecules often have molar masses ranging from tens of thousands to millions of g/mol. Kilodalton (1 kDa = 1,000 g/mol) keeps such figures more manageable, for example for the size of hemoglobin (about 64.5 kDa).
